"Emmeline Pankhurst, along with Millicent Fawcett, were women who were active in promoting the rights of women, particularly the rights of women to vote. It’s important to remember that the women’s movement which began in the late nineteenth century was not simply about the vote, it was about women’s right to participate in education, to work and to be heard. While the crowd at the New York City event applauded and sang suffrage anthems, across the Atlantic a young American named Alice Paul was gaining national attention for her participation in the WSPU’s confrontational demonstrations.
