The name is today used for both the main library itself as well as the municipal library system of Stockholm. Stockholm Public Library was designed by Gunnar Asplund and opened in the spring of 1928. The library was the climax and finale to a neo-classical architectural era, and is based on the geometric shape of a cube encompassing a cylinder. With its simple geometry and classical arrangement, Stockholm ’s Public Library is a difficult building to characterize. Designed by noted Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund during the 1920s, the Stockholm Library Commentary "Asplund's scheme of a round hall surrounded by staircases has a great deal in common with his Lister Courthouse, completed at the same time. The first sketches for the Public Library, prepared in 1921, depict a domed room.

The Stockholm City Library (in Swedish: Stockholms stadsbibliotek or Stadsbiblioteket) is a public library in Stockholm, Sweden, designed by the architect Gunnar Asplund. The project dates back to 1918 and the structure was opened to the public in 1928. Stockholm Public Library was Sweden’s first public library to apply the principle of open shelves where visitors could access books without the need to ask library staff for assistance, a concept Asplund studied in the United States during the construction of the library. Of these projects, Asplund's Stockholm Public Library (1924)(1925)(1926)(1927) 1 is particularly compelling because the architect's knowledge of the sky helped him organize the building on its site, shape space, select materials, and incorporate the character of the Nordic sky into the building such that daylight helps to generate its design Manchester School of Architecture Fieldtrip Film Year 3 2007-08 In the proposed project, the platform of the Stockholm Public Library is extended in order to create the connection with the new building.

In the proposed project, the platform of the Stockholm Public Library is extended in order to create the connection with the new building. The expansion meets the library with a light structure to preserve the importance of Asplund’s building, while the main portion is placed in the opposite side of the site.
